Writing for the Pagan Blog Project has inspired me
to construct a formal altar in a suitable alcove in my bedroom.
This page is not only dedicated to my altar itself but to the work I do with, on and from it.

8.3.2012 Virgo Full Moon
I am being told tonight, by spirit or someone’s voice by ESP, that Altars are an absolute essential for the practitioner. I never used one before. Well, untrue; I used a square rock to burn tobacco on, it might not sound much but the location was scenic. I use smaller pebbles to do the same, otherwise I use the ground. My grandad calls it 'the big shelf'.
I have an imitation granite veneer chipboard two inches thick from a kitchen worksurface, on top of a five inch high table, all of which perfectly fits the alcove to block off the bedroom sink. It has a shaving mirror and a shaving light above it which is useful.
I truly believe that I should not be mimicking other peoples rhetoric and copying their methods, because that is meaningless. Ritual magick has to mean something personal, my own intuitive rituals, for it to have any deep effect. However, given that there is a wealth of established material available, I do intend to experiment with the things that seem sensible and useful to me. Affordable magickal rituals created by knowledgable practitioners and not those created by sellers of the required elements. It is trial & error and a whole lot of faith.
My altar now contains a huge piece of wood in the shape of slanted antlers that I discovered while out for a walk last week. I do regularly find useful things like this while out walking. A few weeks ago on the same hillside I gratefully received of the universe a black plastic imitation snakeskin style book cover for some project as yet to manifest. The wood has some cute warped growth to add character, it is definitely female because of these phallic shapes. I don’t know if that means much yet but I noticed it and experienced wiccan’s and druids seem to make much of such things, so it might well do. The element of Wood. I have always been drawn to it.

ROWAN'S ROAD OPENER POWDER
Equal parts of: Allspice, Bay, Clove, Cinnamon
I feel certain that Rowan intended for this mixture to be sprinkled around and about.
I am one for my incense and so I ended up burning it,
first with damp charcoals which failed and then in a metal balti dish / cauldron on the gas hob.
It smells wonderful and cleared my head.
ELIMINATING PERSONAL POVERTY SPELL
Based on a New Orleans voodoo formula,
this spell will guarantee that you always have the basic requirements in life -
a roof over your head, food in your tummy and so on.
You will need: a small bowl, salt, sugar, rice, an open safety pin.
Method: Fill the bowl with equal parts of sugar, salt and rice.
Place the open safety pin in the center of the mixture.
Keep the bowl out in the open.
Refresh the ingredients when you feel the time is right.
BETTER MUM BOX
Method: I placed a circlet of my son's mothers hair into a small pink box,
enamored with hearts and the words 'Best Mum' upon it.
I also placed a small piece of rose quartz in the box.
I placed this in the cupboard above the front door
so that every time she stands near to it or passes beneath it,
as she does every 4th day to hand over our son as per court order,
then its energies will take effect upon her and she will become
a loving, caring mother, specifically a 'best mum'.
Consequences: A letter from Child Tax Credits today.
Somebody has put in another claim.
The court based the court order on our previous agreement
that if I let my ex have overnight stays of our son,
after her neglect of him due to her breakdown,
that I could have the CTC;
therefore I can afford to keep living in his family home.
This is the 3rd time this has happened.
The court order backs me as his Primary Carer.
Is this a consequence of magickal ritual? or
a coincidence in a world where there is no coincidence because everything is connected

RIDDING SPELL - CLEANSE A PLACE OF OLD INFLUENCES
This spell incorporates methods used in American Indian rituals.
A smudge stick is a bundle of dried herbs that cleanse and clear the atmosphere to make it suitable for a different purpose.
You will need: A smudge stick, An oyster or sea shell (to help waft the smoke)
Method: Light the smudge stick.
Blow on it gently until it is well alight.
It should be kept alight throughout the ceremony.
Move clockwise around the house and clockwise around each room in turn.
Waft the smoke in front of you as you go.
Make sure you do this thoroughly, ensuring that all the corners are included.
Repeat this action three times in each room.
" I command negativity, fears, problems, habits and bad influences to be gone."
Notes: I have been doing the garden recently and I found a sea shell in it.
Our tools come when we need them!
Consequences: While doing this ritual, I felt layers dropping off me where others had inserted their tone into my aura.
I heard the tones snap and end. I realized in good humor how serious and how deeply
and therefore how powerfully I am about this, about making a fresh start here in my home.
That the manifesting comes from me, and I am filling my aura up with my intent,
where before there were holes filled by other peoples intent.
I remembered that I have some celestite that is useful for blocking out interfering energies.
RING OF PROTECTION
In this method of working you place a protective shield around your home
so that no harm can come to either it or the people therin.
You will need: The power of your own mind.
Method: Visualize a ring of light surrounding your property.
Ask your guardians or deities to protect it and its occupants for as long as necessary.
Reinforce the circle of light whenever you go away, or indeed, whenever you think about it.

WITCHES BOTTLE
I began to construct a witches bottle.
I have made several of these in the past, one for each house I lived in.
It is a form of protective magick that has much in common with making Orgonite.
I use a particular method which is organic.
You will need: glass jar with sealable lid. nails, pins; spiky metal things, your own urine
some people put other symbolic items in
Method: fill the jar with the spikey metal things and urinate in it.
Seal the lid without spilling any. Place it somewhere secure,
eg; buried in the garden or close to the house, or hidden in a cupboard where it will remain undisturbed.
Some people think use of their own urine is disgusting. I find the process liberating and sensual.
I suspect it works by removing energy-barbs that tug at us from the base chakra.
BONFIRE
at dusk
There is nothing like a good blaze.
I had loads of wood to burn up in the garden and finding a box of grotty old cardboard in the shed spurred me on to do it. Fire ritual. I chose close to sunset so that the bonfire would carry into the night. Also in the shed was an old metal water tank that sufficed perfectly as a fire container. The grumpy old fart next door keeps complaining about everything I do in my garden so I opted for 'being seen to be safe' even if from my experience of living in forests I know it is actually safer to have a ground based bonfire than an upright metal container that stands risk of falling over and which gets hot enough to cause first degree burns if touched. But that’s civilization (the process of being made civic) for you.

PROGRAMMING CELESTITE CRYSTAL
You will need: A crystal. I have used a bundle of Celestite.
Method: transfer Intent of Will into the crystal. This is called patterning.
"I program these crystals to block out unwanted influences,
especially from neighbors who interfere in my space.
Everyone will find their own level."
Notes: I ordered some bundles of Celestite from the internet over a year ago.
It has been stashed in a heap of random odds&ends for that time.
I unearthed it while clearing space to make my altar.
It never needs cleansing as it is so high and pure a vibration, useful for chakra cleansing.
Celestite is said to be good for blocking out unwanted influences,
so it is perfect for this ritual.
I gave a shard of this to my occasional-protege.

WASHING UP
Perhaps not considered a magickal spell by many, the act of making the water flow of the house clear, and cleansing eating utensils, is certainly a ritual worthy of mention. I do not wash up every day because I simply do not have the time to. Instead, every few days I take ten long minutes to zone out of everything else and have some meditative peace time. So long as my little boy isn't around to push me away from the sink and scream at me for attention while I am doing it. My mam suggested, and it works, to put him in his high chair and feed him apple slices while engaging in the ritual.

SALT: CRYSTAL CLEANSING
One quick and powerful method of getting people off my back is to throw a small amount of salt over my head/shoulder while saying the name of any person I want them to stop bothering me or even thinking about me. It cancels any magick or ill will that they have worked against me. I usually use coarse sea salt, never the processed stuff that has been mixed with a preservative because that stuff is crap. I make a difference between sea salt as female and rock salt as male, the precept for which is in the standing stones of Britain and Europe which although they all contain high quartz content, the female ones from the ocean bed (sandstone) and the harder ones from mountains (granite) are male and female.
Stonehenge is made of several types of stone from several sources, but the famous big ring is Preseli blue stone -
masculine and it reacts with water, which activates it.
Therefore Stonehenge is a masculine storm temple, hence its mythological association with Druidry.
Archeological evidence supports that it once had a wooden village built around it in a ring.
The geo-energy is channeled through standing stone rings, focusing and harnessing it.
The same way as electric from an astro-globe is focussed wherever you place your fingertip on the orb.
The salt ritual works something like that, I suppose.
I usually perform this ritual with my back to the kitchen sink if I am doing it indoors.
If there was not a commercial availability for salt
I regard that swimming in the sea would be a sufficient equivalent cleansing ritual.

SAGE SMUDGE STICKS
Today I made a batch of Sage Smudge Sticks from the bushes in my garden.
They are currently drying in my airing cupboard.

Smudge Sticks
Smudge sticks are used in traditional Native American ceremonies to purify people and places.
There are similar ceremonies in many cultures where herbs are burned for cleansing.
Smudging can be used to counteract depression, anger or bitterness.
If you would like to try smudging, it is very easy to make your own sage smudge sticks.
Things You'll Need: Sage, Garden clippers, Sturdy string, 12 by 18 piece of newspaper.
Method: Cut the sage branches into 7 to 10 inch lengths.
Snip a piece of string 2 1/2 times the length of the cut sage branches.
Hold three branches together with the tips pointing down.
Begin wrapping the string tightly around the base of the branches.
Wrap firmly, working your way to the tips of the branches.
When you reach the tips, switch directions and begin working your way back up to the base of the sage branches.
Tie the two ends of the string together when you reach the base.
Place the wrapped branches 1/4 of the way up from the bottom of the piece of newspaper,
and fold the short end of the paper over the stick.
Use a firm, even pressure to roll the stick up inside the paper.
When the paper is all used up, you have a smudge stick.
Trim the edges neatly.
Dry your sage smudge sticks in a flat basket or on a screen for a week,
and use them in your own smudging ceremonies.

SPICE COOKIES
I do not generally like to eat processed foods, however it is a little different where home baking is involved.
In Egyptian Hieratic the symbol for Bread is the same as the symbol for World.
There is no mistake that the concepts are related; nor that the words Bread and Braid are entwined.
I cannot remember where I read that eating a simple flat-bread is a method of purification.
Certainly this has been adopted as a ritual of Christianity as it is practiced in the UK,
with the Eucharist; "this is my body" &etc.
I have never been especially good at baking cake although I used to work as a bakers apprentice.
At times in my life I have survived on humble herb stew and chipati's.
Flour and Water are the only elements or ingredients necessary for the basic recipe.
Addition of Sugar is the difference between a flat-bread and a sweet biscuit.
I am fortunate to now have a well stocked spice rack.
I have been working with Sage today from my herb garden.
And earth from the whorl of my skin, that no amount of scrubbing can get out.
Dough does the job better than anything.
Add chopped fruit, raisins, occasionally chopped nuts, anything you have available.
I never use Egg in baking because it tastes like crap. Same with Milk. I do use Olive Oil and Water.
Never use Salt in cooking (confession; have recently discovered garlic salt on sliced baked potatoes).
Baking Cookies becomes a ritual act, on the basis that the most important ingredient being Love;
a very plain and simple basic water & flour dough also takes on the psyche and emotive qualities of the baker.
The dough cooks to a cookie and its energies enhance the world of the eaters experiences.

BAMBOO & QUARTZ
The nasty neighbor has planted a species of bamboo, before I moved into the house.
It has grown up under the fence.
It cannot spread far because there is a stone paving slab path alongside it.
I pulled up seven of the shoots and replanted them opposite,
so that in a few years there will be a bamboo archway over the path.
It is in a patch that I have isolated with deep stones around it so the roots cannot spread beyond.
In the center of the patch I placed a large rock and on top of this,
a large, nearly 1 foot rough natural glowing white quartz rock
that came from the side of Tabernacle Hill in Carmarthenshire,
where once I pulled a thousand shards of glass from the spring to cleanse the area.
The planted bamboo blows gently in the wind and is relaxing,
it blocks out some of the harsh glare from afternoon sunlight bouncing off the white shed.
It is serenely peaceful, my little zen garden.
Apparently it is Ostara tomorrow
(officially the first day of Spring Northern Hemisphere)

you will need: freshly picked mint, water, pan, hob, empty spray bottle
method: boil the mint in the water, fill the spray bottle, spray it around your home while chanting;
"Make this a place of Fresh; drive the Stale out!"

it blocks out some of the harsh glare from afternoon sunlight bouncing off the white shed.
It is serenely peaceful, my little zen garden.

MINTY FRESH SPRAY
you will need: freshly picked mint, water, pan, hob, empty spray bottle
method: boil the mint in the water, fill the spray bottle, spray it around your home while chanting;
"Make this a place of Fresh; drive the Stale out!"
