H is for Hope In the classical Greek myth of Pandora, her forbidden sin is of disobeying her fathers advice, by opening his box and unleashing all the worlds nasty's on us all. The story goes that she slammed the lid shut, just in time to trap only one last thing in it; Hope. This myth, as with the best ones, works on many levels; for that is what myth is. The Feminist approach; Pandora is a story about a young girl discovering her sexuality and creating chaos in the world. The Masculinist approach; respect your father's wisdom, there is a reason for inhibiting freedom. Hidden lesson; open discussion and explaining reasons is preferable in managing childrens behaviour to apparently random control rules, because comprehensively 'understanding' is preferable to 'rebellion' in maintaining balance. Tyrants breed Dissidents. The Hopi Indians have a word; Koyaanisqaatsi It means 'world out of balance' That is what Pandora's box represents. As sexual metaphor; her box needs adjusting, putting into balance, to restore an order and tranquility to the world. There will be Hell to play if she doesn't. The Keyword for this living myth is; Hope.
